The Dears are back with a new album called Lovers Rock, out May 15th. As part of the announcement, they’ve dropped a new single “The Worst in Us.”
The track starts off strong with raucous electric guitar and powerful piano, complimenting each other as the song develops into a catchy, upbeat track. The song opens with, “Babe, I’m here to help you to understand/That I will defend you/And don’t forget this world has no chance/Against a flame-throwing vehement romance,” emphasizing the song’s message about coming together in love.
Murray Lightburn, who makes up the core duo alongside Natalia Yanchak, said the following in a statement:
“The question we’re asking in the music is, ‘how do we navigate so much bullshit in this world?’ We’re still playing this dumb rock music. But there’s always gonna be a little twist of the knife, cutting into something deep to make you feel like you’re alive. To say, ‘I know what you’re going through. And I’m hearing you, and I’m with you.’ That’s what the music is supposed to do.”
