Unknown Mortal Orchestra, the psychedelic rock project created by New Zealander Ruban Nielson, are back with another groovy tune “Weekend Run.” The single is a perfect summer song with wavy guitar riffs, bold percussion and smooth laidback vocals. Easy on the ears, the song’s repetitive nature mimics the repetition of the days of the week.
The track recounts Nielson’s days of the week, before building up to the weekend. In a press release he said:
“At the end of the day I don’t take for granted that I have the perfect job—I truly work to make music that will set someone’s day right and I think that shines through on ‘Weekend Run.’”

The song is their first proper single following their 2018 album Sex & Food. Between this time however, they have released IC-O1 Hanoi (recorded in the Vietnamese city of Hanoi) and three 20-minute instrumental singles from 2019 and 2020; “SB-06”, “SB-07” and “SB-08”.
Since then, Unknown Mortal Orchestra has also collaborated with Free Nationals, Daniel Caesar, Gorillaz as well as remixed Westerman and Soccer Mommy tracks.
The new single is out now via Jagjaguwar (Bon Iver, Angel Olsen, Moses Sumney) and more music from the band is on the horizon.
