In an interview with Portland Radio Project, Elliott Smith’s friend Kevin Moyer shared a previously unreleased track by the singer, which shows his first foray into writing music. You can hear “Ocean” below at around the 32:00 mark.

Smith passed away in 2003 from two stab wounds to the chest. The case was never closed – but his death is widely accepted as a suicide due to his history of depression, substance abuse, and self-harm.

An Elliot Smith documentary, Heaven Adores You, premiered earlier this year. It documents the ups and downs of the singer’s tumultuous life, up until his tragic death.
