Listen: Ya Lo Tengo celebrates Hanukkah with new track ‘Eight Candles’

'Hanukkah+' is set for release on November 22

Indie rockers Yo La Tengo have released a new track called “Eight Candles” off of Randall Poster’s forthcoming compilation album, Hanukkah+.

Ya Lo Tengo is known for throwing a concert for every night of Hanukkah. This all started in their hometown in the Maxwell venue and has moved to the Bowery Ballroom in Lower Manhattan. The band’s annual celebration was the part of the inspiration for Hanukkah+. This compilation was created in the hope of expanding the canon of Hanukkah music.

“When our old friend Randy Poster asked us to contribute to an album of Hanukkah songs he was putting together, we were kind of stumped,” the band explains in a statement. “As non-practicing Jews (and non-Jews), truthfully the holiday has little meaning for us (that’s the meta joke behind Yo La Tengo’s Hanukkah shows), but we were open to inspiration. We thought maybe another friend, Sam Elwitt, could crack the code, and we think he did a fantastic job with his composition Eight Candles.”
