Live-action ‘Little Mermaid’ casts singer Halle Bailey as Ariel

Production is expected to start in early 2020.

19-year-old singer-actress Halle Bailey will become a Disney princess, as she’s set to star as Ariel in the live-action musical, The Little Mermaid.

Bailey, who is part of the sister R&B duo Chloe x Halle, was cast in the starring role on Wednesday. The live-action musical will be jam-packed with stars such as Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay, and Awkwafina. Rob Marshall is set to direct the film after the success of his last Disney film, Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Returns.

“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” Marshall said in a statement.
