Man Caught With 53 Stolen Cell Phones in His Swimsuit at Royal Blood Show

Thief sentenced to three years behind bars

A 22-year-old Romanian man was arrested last month at a Royal Blood concert in Birmingham after he was caught stealing 53 mobile phones, which he had hidden in a full-body swimsuit. Seriously.

Alin Marin was able to pickpocket concert goers while they were thrashing around in the mosh pit. West Midlands Police were hip to thieves swiping phones at an earlier Royal Blood gig, so Marin was arrested after leaving the show. He had already taken the phones to a stash in the parking lot.

This is what we found a pickpocket wearing to help him stash dozens of phones stolen from Royal Blood fans at The Arena #Birmingham. Here's how our covert officers caught him:

“This was organized pickpocketing,” Birmingham city centre Police Sergeant Julia Slater said. “Marin went equipped to steal phones and took advantage of revellers enjoying themselves in the standing area. Many of the phones were taken from front jeans pockets, which people believe is a safer place to carry valuables, but due to the jostling in the mosh pit they simply didn’t realize they’d been targeted.

“He slipped phones inside the swimsuit and effectively turned himself into a deposit box for the phones, allowing him to carry tens of phones concealed around his body.”

Marin was charged with theft at Birmingham Crown Court on Monday and was sentenced to three years in prison.
