Matt’s Best Music of 2013: Indie Rock/Pop Edition

My top picks from the year

MattHart_175x175Matt Hart is known for his musical work under the name The Russian Futurists. Matt is currently a co-host on “Indie Mornings with Brian, Matt and Candice” on Indie88.

Empire of the Sun – Ice On The Dunes
Not only was this my favourite Indie Pop record of the year but it was also the best concert I attended. The band turned the Danforth Music Hall into an otherworldly space discotheque. There were lasers. There were dancers. There was even a smoke-breathing totem pole!!! This disco pop record is gold, there isn’t a bad song on it. Check out their first album Walking On A Dream if you go for this sort of stuff.

Ducktails – The Flower Lane
This record came out at the very start of 2013 but it’s stuck with me all year. It’s so catchy and smooth that I just keep coming back to it. I have a hard time picking a top track but just go get it, it’s totally worth every penny. The best thing to come out New Jersey in a very long time!!!

First Rate People – Everest
This Toronto band is still a secret to many music fans but they’ve been on my radar since they released the amazing track Orion a few years back. Their blend of electronic and folk music is seamless and the balance it creates makes their sound very distinctive. Most importantly the songs are amazing, keep an eye on these kids.
