Matt’s Best-Of 2014: EDM

Who bleeped and blooped best in 2014

Last week I listed off my top 3 picks for best hip-hop of 2014, and this week I’ll tackle electronic/EDM. It’s been a great year with a mix of up-and-comers and veterans making up my list of hot bleeps and bloops.

Aphex Twin – Syro

Man, it was so good to hear the legendary Richard D. James drop another batch of pure A.D.D. insanity. The thing that impresses me the most about his latest release is how little he has been influenced by modern music. He lives in a bubble, which is why he still sounds like no one else.

Jex Opolis – Good Timin’

Local producer Jex Opolis makes my list for the second year in a row, with a string of flawless singles. I hope he will drop a full-length in 2015, but until then, you should check all of his singles on his label Good Timin’. I have no idea why this dude isn’t way bigger than he is.

Tycho – Awake

Just about anything record label Ghostly International releases is gold, but I suspect this record will end up on a lot of year-end lists. This record is dreamy and atmospheric without being too sleepy, and I’m so glad I found it!
