Matt’s Favourite Comedy and Indie Band Collisions

Wacky vids from Yo La Tengo, Major Lazer, Pavement, Mumford & Sons, and Kevin Drew

The latest Kevin Drew video (below) features comedian Zach Galifianakis as an overly serious dance instructor who is trying to convince Drew to make a “dance video” to sell more records. The hilarious video is a perfect mash up of comedy and indie rock but it isn’t the first time these worlds have collided. Here are some of my fave wacky vidz:

Yo La Tengo – Sugarcube
This video features David Cross and Bob Odenkirk from HBO’s Mr. Show and it is the funniest indie video ever made in my opinion. The band must go to “rock school” to learn valuable skills like trashing hotel rooms and bowing your guitar. Just watch it and thank me later.

Major Lazer – Keep It Going Louder
This is part funny part haunt-your-nightmares creepy. The video was directed by comedy duo Tim & Eric’s Eric Wareheim and it incorporates their insane, day-glo sensibilities in to the dancehall/electro group’s clip. Straight up WTF.

Pavement – Cut Your Hair
This might be more absurdist than “ha-ha funny” but either way the song and video rules. I like any video set in a barber shop where a guy in a gorilla suit gets a little off the top.

Mumford & Sons – Hopeless Wanderer
Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Will Forte and Ed Helms as Mumford & Sons. Do I need to say more? It was a breakthrough video for the band that shows the beardos actually have a sense of humour. Warning: video contains scenes of mild bass humping.
