CMW like most festivals, is more of a sprint than a jog so you need to plan out your shows accordingly. It helps to consider venue separation, travel times, unexpected delays and have a backup plan for gigs your wristband might not get you in to. Here are the top 5 shows I’ll be racing around to get to.
1. Flatbush Zombies and Bodega Bamz: May 9, The Phoenix
Both acts are part of the current New York hip-hop renaissance and embody the more nihilistic side of rap. Which means the show will be a sweaty zoo and very hard to get into. Arrive early.
2. Diana: May 8-9, Drake Underground
Diana released a great record this year and buzz surrounding the band has remained pretty steady. They have a great live show and yes, there will be sax! Both shows are early (10pm) so you can still hit up loads of shows after.
3. Odesza: May 9, Tattoo Rock Parlour
This Seattle duo will be doing a ton of festival gigs this summer but this is a good chance to catch their choppy, sample-heavy electronic sound in a smaller club setting.
4. Owen Pallett with Doldrums: May 10, Danforth Music Hall
Owen is the man behind the strings for everyone from Arcade Fire to Taylor Swift. An unbelievable performer and recent Oscar nominee, Owen is in a league all his own. Get there early to catch Doldrums, another promising act on the rise.
5. Television: with Brendan Canning, May 10, The Phoenix
Television are absolute legends. They influenced every post rock, post punk and countless indie bands. If you aren’t familiar don’t feel bad, they have flown under the radar for their whole career. For fans of Talking Heads and punk that leans towards the artsy.
