Only One Blockbuster Video Remains in America

The end of an era you didn't know still existed

Some things, however corporate they may be, are best left described by the prose via the monologue from Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s “The Dead Flag Blues.”

The sun has fallen down
and the billboards are all leering
and the flags are all dead at the top of their poles

I said: “kiss me, you’re beautiful –
these are truly the last days”

Only one Blockbuster Video remains in America, following the news of Alaska’s two locations set to shutter operations. The last one standing sits in Bend, Oregon, where we’re left to presume there is no high-speed internet, and residents get around via horse and carriage.

Did you know people still rent movies? Neither did we. It’s almost time to say farewell. So long, Blockbuster Video. We’ll never recoup those hours spent perusing the aisles searching for something to take home, although the rentals were overpriced to begin with. Maybe the real rental shop was the friends we made along the way.
