Perfume Genius releases video for new ‘deathbed-y’ cover of ‘I Will Survive’

Perfume Genius has shared a haunting cover of Gloria Gaynor’s hit, “I Will Survive.”

Perfume Genius added his own distinctive waltzy twist to the iconic disco anthem. Revolving around a melancholic piano line, you’ve never heard “I Will Survive” under such a devastating lens. In his Substack newsletter, Mike Hadreas revealed that he had recorded the cover for a commercial project that never came to fruition.

“I recorded this at home for a commercial pitch, but they didn’t give me the money,” Perfume Genius writes. “I suppose the cover is a little deathbed-y, I was very serious that day, but I like how it turned out. In particular the last moment… I might stretch that in to something new.”

“I dug around online for a while, looking for video to pair it with, and ended up with an old Bowflex commercial and forest fire footage that I spliced together,” Perfume Genius adds. “Happy to share it with you. Goodbye everyone.”

Perfume Genius also recently teamed up with Hypnotic Brass Ensemble for a cover of Richard Youngs’ “A Fullness of Light in Your Soul.” The cover comes from Hypnotic Brass Ensembles’ This Is a Mindfulness Drill. It is a tribute to Youngs’ 1998 album, Sapphie. The collection also features collaborations with Moses Sumney and Sharon Van Etten.
