Perfume Genius shares video for new single ‘Pop Song,’ announces upcoming album ‘Ugly Season’

Perfume Genius has announced his new album, Ugly Season, with a video for its first single, “Pop Song.”

Out on June 17th via Matador, Ugly Season serves as the accompaniment to Perfume Genius and choreographer Kate Wallich’s immersive dance piece, The Sun Still Burns Here. The piece was commissioned by the Seattle Theatre Group and Mass MoCA and performed at several residencies throughout 2019. Alongside Ugly Season, Perfume Genius will share an accompanying short film from visual artist and director Jacolby Satterwhite. Today’s preview, “Pop Song,” is an ethereal, uplifting tune with dreamy melodies and unique instrumentals.

“This project is the genesis of a whole new direction that I’m taking, one that I’ve been thinking about within this endemic culture since 2020,” Satterwhite explains. “Mike [Hadreas] and I are both writing scripts. My visual narrative serendipitously mirrors the lyrical direction in his music; it’s a rare, like-minded bond. It’s a creation myth. How do you architecturally mould and render an idealised version of utopia? It’s about making something that you desire so beyond your scope that it’s hard to grapple into a concrete form.”

Satterwhite is known for his immersive multidisciplinary technique, which merges live video, 3D animation, drawing, and print making. “Pop Song” came accompanied by a video from Satterwhite.
