Pixies release dark new ballad ‘Vault Of Heaven’

Pixies have shared another new single, “Vault Of Heaven.”

The track comes from their first new album in three years, Doggerel, out September 30th via BMG. Instrumentally, the track takes on a bit of a surf-rock sound, with a dark, grungy twist. Throughout the track, frontman Black Francis sings lyrics that reference 7-Eleven, delivering lines like, “Here in the vault of heaven/ Just try to keep me straight/ But I ended up there in another case.”

Directed by Charles Derenne, the accompanying video is perfectly peculiar, following two characters decked out in Elvis and Zorro costumes.

“This time around we have grown,” guitarist Joey Santiago explains. “We no longer have under two-minute songs. We have little breaks, more conventional arrangements but still our twists in there.”

“We’re trying to do things that are very big and bold and orchestrated,” vocalist and guitarist Black Francis adds. “The punky stuff, I really like playing it but you just cannot artificially create that shit. There’s another way to do this, there’s other things we can do with this extra special energy that we’re encountering.”

In addition to “Vault Of Heaven,” the forthcoming album features the previously released “There’s a Moon On,” but it doesn’t feature their first single in two years, “Human Crime.”
