Following the closing ceremonies for the Pan Am Games, Forum Research took a poll of Torontonians, asking whether or not they’d support a bid to host the 2024 summer Olympic Games.
From the 755 residents they asked, 61% said they would like to see us play host again. Only 30% were opposed to the bid, and 9% said they didn’t know.
“There’s a warm halo emanating from the Pan Am Games right now and it would appear citizens no longer fear the potential congestion and cost of an Olympics,” said Forum president Lorne Bozinoff in an interview with Metro News.
Older Torontonians and/or Progressive Conservative voters seem to be the least enthusiastic about the bid.
When the city folk surveyed were asked if they would vote for a councillor who supported an Olympic games bid, 52% said yes, 26% said no and 22% didn’t know.
“In Toronto’s previous summer Olympics bid (for the 2008 Games hosted by Beijing) there was significant opposition, and it was a bit of a club people could wave at their councillor,” Bozinoff said. “It’s early, but I am not seeing any of that this time around.”
To apply to host the 2024 games, cities have until mid-September to submit applications, to be reviewed by the International Olympic Committee. Rome, Paris and Hamburg have also said they’ll make host bids.
John Tory, though, faced with what seems like a zillion questions about the Olympics, said Toronto should wait for the Pan Am “dust to settle.” He says he’ll hold a “broad consultation” about it, looking to city council members, residents, businesses, unions and sports organizations for their opinions.
“I’ve often said, long before I was the mayor, that the great benefit of participating in some of these international events is that it gives you deadlines,” Tory told reporters after a transit announcement. “The show must go on and you have to get things done in time for the show, whatever it happens to be … But you can’t make the decision on that basis alone.
