Raina’s Reason for the Repeat Button

You know when you find a song and you just can’t get enough? A track that you’ll start over before it’s even done because you never want it to end? The song that becomes the reason for the repeat button? Here I’ll tell you what song I’ve been listening to over and over again – new or old – and why you should check it out.

Holy shit. Where to even begin with this one? Owen Pallett’s new single is mind-blowing.

This is the sort of track where you FEEL IT – it triggers a physical reaction. For me – it’s goosebumps. It gets hard to breathe. It makes all my muscles feel tense and weird. It’s as if this song starts winding itself around you at the beginning, it’s ominous and moves relentlessly forward – wrapping tighter and tighter as it progresses. Your vision narrows. Your focus gets more intense . It builds and builds until you find yourself gasping for air and with your eyes half shut at the climax of the strings and the crashing cymbals and the sharp, harsh drum hits and then suddenly it releases. It’s over. It’s gone. You’re left bewildered. Out of breath.

And then, you want to ride it again.

To sum it all up — listen for the lyric: “Hurtle hurtle over the breach, Let your body fall out of reach.” It sort of describes this whole feeling way more concisely than I just did.

From Owen Pallett’s newest album In Conflict, and the current reason for my repeat button, this is “The Riverbed”.
