Ryerson Students Request Name Change Due to Residential School Link

Name change falls under list of demands made by Student Union

Both the Ryerson Students Union and the Indigenous Students Association are campaigning for a name change due to the link between the school’s name and the residential school system.

The university is named after Egerton Ryerson, a historical figure who is most famously known for spearheading Ontario’s public education. His work has also been associated with providing the research that shaped Canada’s shameful residential school system.

Changing Ryerson’s name was one of 11 demands made by the students union, which were posted in full on Facebook, and included creating an Indigenous only space for students. See the full list below.
