After a long debate of where the iconic sign should find its new home, the Sam the Record Man sign will soon rest above Yonge-Dundas Square, watching over the downtown core.
HANDOUT/City of Toronto
The new sign will perch itself atop a city-owned building at 277 Victoria St. City council came to the decision earlier this morning, meaning the sign is no longer Ryerson University’s responsibility to install at the Student Learning Center, the home of the original Sam the Record Man store.
Ryerson will however pick up the tab on this one. Ryerson will pay the cost of installing, operating, and maintaining the sign in Yonge-Dundas Square.
City council also voted to ensure that any future owner of the Victoria Street building, which is seen as a prime target for redevelopment, must take on the preservation of the sign.
