School Jamz: The Best Music Videos Set In Schools

If you’re heading back to school of any kind this time of the year might be a bummer for you. Let me briefly cheer you up with some music. One thing to keep in mind at school is that being cunning is just as important as being smart. Do what you have to do get through your classes and remember this is the last time in your life that you’ll have summers off. School has been the subject of countless music videos so here are my faves (and no I will not include “Hit Me baby One More Time”).

Yo La Tengo – “Sugarcube”

This is one of the funniest videos ever and features Bob Odenkirk (Mr. Show, Breaking Bad) and David Cross (Mr. Show, Arrested Development) so you know it’s going to be hilarious. Watch the band go to “Rock School”.

Nirvana – “Smells Like Teen Spirit”

This video captures the angst of high school which seems adorable when you become a grown up. Either way, this is a jam and it still looks great.

Leaders Of The New School – “Case of The PTA”

This classic 90’s hip hop jam features a young Busta Rhymes and if this song doesn’t cheer you up you might be in too far gone. Class clown action in full effect.

Nada Surf – “Popular”

A weird cross between an educational video about teenage dating and a music video. I get the sense that these dudes got their hearts broken a few times in high school.

The Pharcyde – “Passing Me By”

This tale of unrequited love with a teacher is a classic. While the entire video isn’t school-themed, the best part of the song is.

The Ramones – “Rock & Roll High School”

The Ramones at their most snotty and bratty.

BONUS: Casey and his Brother – “Don’t Wanna Go To School”

Not really sure how to explain this. Just watch. Tim and Eric play the Danforth Music Hall on September 6.
