Sharon Van Etten sings of ‘what family means to the individual’ on haunting new single ‘Used to It’

Sharon Van Etten has returned with “Used to It,” which was originally written for Baby God.

Baby God is an HBO documentary about fertility specialist Quincy Fortier, who used his own sperm to impregnate women. The documentary team ended up changing their musical direction, but Van Etten still reworked the track. Taking inspiration from the project, Van Etten used “Used To It” to address the need for connection amidst COVID-19. The track also looks at family and love.

“I found myself welcomely challenged to the idea of writing a song about the concept of family, connection through blood, nature vs. nurture while attempting to incorporate ideas of love and the complexities of science and technology,” Van Etten explains. “I am grateful for this song to be able to have a new life, relating more to the times we have all been living through and redefining the meaning of this song by focusing on the positives of seeking connection and understanding what family means to the individual.”

Alongside the track, Van Etten shared a video for the song, created by bandmate Charley Damski. Starring dancer and choreographer Hayden J Frederick, the “Used To It” video is a moving, cinematic piece. About the video, Van Etten says that they were able to portray her “feelings of internal struggles, while also finding space for oneself and embracing that pain in order to move on.”

“Used To It” follows Van Etten’s recently released single, “Porta.”
