Sober October Pitfalls

I’ve never had a problem with drinking, but I think it’s good to give it up every once in a while to focus on eating right and staying in shape. It’s a chance to clear your mind and seize the day without having to worry about a hangover.

The problem is there are ALWAYS events that seem better with a beer or a glass of wine, so the challenge is to be aware of the times you’ll be tempted and enjoy them without imbibing. Remember, you don’t need alcohol to have a good time! It’s what I’ll keep telling myself throughout Sober October.

Check out this calendar of pitfalls where you might be tempted to drink.

Oct 2: Oktoberfest at Amsterdam Brewery. It’s a holiday centred around beer and accordion music.
Oct 3: Miley Cyrus on SNL. A drinking game where you take a drink every time she sticks out her tongue sounds like a good idea at first, but you’ll regret it in the morning.
Oct 4-5: Chvrches at the Danforth. They’re not exactly a hard partying band, but it’s hard to avoid the beer kiosks while you’re waiting around for the show to start.
Oct 7: Hockey season. The Leafs and Habs at the ACC and fans have a motto “win or lose, we booze.”
Oct 8: Blue Jays in the playoffs. It’s been 22 years, but we can still cheer without cheersing.
Oct 9: Pan starring Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard hits theatres. I’m jealous of his moustache and it makes me want to drink.
Oct 10: Thanksgiving weekend. It’s hard to resist a fermented pumpkin drink.
Oct 11: Season 6 premiere of The Walking Dead. Ask yourself – have you ever watched this show and NOT been drinking?
Oct 12: Turkey dinner. Seems kind of pointless without a glass of wine, but let’s give it a shot.
Oct 13: Tove Lo at Sound Academy. Listen to her song Habits and you’ll understand.
Oct 15: Toronto Snow Show. Apres-ski usually involves a couple “wobbly pops.” TM.
Oct 16: Toronto After Dark Film Festival. You’ll feel like you need a drink after watching these freaky Sci-Fi and Horror movies.
Oct 17: Catfish and The Bottlemen at The Phoenix. British bands inspire you to put back a couple pints, or as they call it “breakfast.”
Oct 19: Election Day. Voting can be the most exhilarating/depressing thing, depending on who wins.
Oct 20: Cold War Kids at The Danforth. Good times band but this time I’ll Hang Me Up To Dry.
Oct 21: Back To The Future Day. In the movie Back To The Future Part II Marty and Doc time travel from 1989 all the way to 2015, if you still remember the original prepare to feel old.
Oct 23: Cask Days at Evergreen Brick Works. Another event based solely around drinking some really tasty beers.
Oct 25: Halloween Haunt at Canada’s Wonderland. It’s cold and you might be tempted to warm up with a thermos full of Kahlua.
Oct 26: Margarita Monday.
Oct 27: Taco Tuesday.
Oct 28: Drunk Uncle.
Oct 29: Whisky Live at the Sony Centre. These tastings can get pretty ryediculous.
Oct 30: El Vy release Return To The Moon. Matt Berninger’s voice makes me want a snifter of cognac.
Oct 31: Halloween. An excuse to pretend you’re someone else (who drinks a lot.) Don’t end up like that pumpkin!
