Spotify launches new personalized playlist ‘Daily Drive’ that combines music, news and podcasts

The ever-so popular music streaming service, Spotify, has launched Daily Drive, a new personalized playlist that combines music, news, and podcasts. Their goal is to drive podcasts to the forefront, and they will be produced by The Wall Street Journal, NPR and PRI.

As you can tell by the name of the playlist, it will target commuters. The Daily Drive will consist of music that is already enjoyed by the user, in addition to recommended music and news from credible sources in a single playlist. The music and news will be updated and refreshed throughout the day. For commuters, this means that your morning playlist will be different from your evening playlist.

With podcasts on the rise, Spotify is focused on making podcasts a larger part of the service. The company has made it known that they are willing to spend $500 million this year in order to improve podcast offerings. Spotify has already spent $300 million on acquiring Anchor for its podcast creation tools and Gimlet media.

There haven’t been details as to which media outlets will be used to cover the news besides the ones mentioned above. As of now, the Daily Drive is only available in the U.S. but there has been some testing in other languages, so it is only a matter of time before Spotify launches the playlist worldwide.
