Spotify has disabled auto-shuffle on albums, all thanks to Adele.
Before Friday (November 19th), shuffle was Spotify’s default setting when a user would listen to an album. Upon the release of her highly anticipated album, 30, Adele requested the change with the streaming service.
“This was the only request I had in our ever changing industry!” Adele wrote on Twitter. “We don’t create albums with so much care and thought into our track listing for no reason. Our art tells a story and our stories should be listened to as we intended.”

The Spotify Twitter account then replied to the tweet saying, “Anything for you.”
Before this, pressing the play button for an album on Spotify aut-shuffled songs. The shuffle feature is still available if a user is playing an individual track from an album. Now, however, the main play button does not default to playing an album out of order.
“As Adele mentioned, we are excited to share that we have begun rolling out a new Premium feature that has been long requested by both users and artists to make ‘play’ the default button on all albums,” a Spotify representative told Variety. “For those users still wishing to shuffle an album, they can go to the Now Playing View and select the ‘shuffle’ toggle. As always, we will continue to iterate our products and features to create the best experiences for both artists and their fans.”
