St. Vincent covers Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)’ at the Songwriters Hall of Fame

St. Vincent took to the Songwriters Hall of Fame 2022 ceremony last night (June 16th) where she covered Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This).”

Ahead of being inducted at New York’s Marriott Marquis hotel, St. Vincent kicked off the ceremony with a cover of “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This).” St. Vincent’s rendition of the track stays true to the gritty original, but it sees her throaty vocals taking the lead as she delivers the song’s famous lyrics.

Later, St. Vincent took to the podium to recall the first time she saw Eurythmics on MTV, as a “beautiful, orange-haired androgynous creature appeared wearing a suit and tie.” She then told the Associated Press that “they were scary, they were sexy, they were smart and they were impossibly cool.”

Later on in the ceremony, Eurythmics reunited to perform “Here Comes The Rain Again.”

In addition to Eurythmics, there were several other inductees, including Mariah Carey, Lil Nas X, The Neptunes, Steve Miller, and The Isley Brothers.

St. Vincent has been no stranger to covers as of late. In addition to this rendition of “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This),” she recently covered Lipps Inc.’s “Funkytown.” The cover comes from the soundtrack for Minions: The Rise of Gru, which has a surprisingly stacked lineup of stars covering songs from the ’70s. Produced by Jack Antonoff, the synth-driven cover offers a vocoder-heavy twist on the beloved tune. It feels pretty perfect for a Minions movie, with bubbly harmonies and bouncy melodies.
