Status/Non-Status returns with video for new single ‘Mashkiki Sunset’

OMBIIGIZI member Adam Sturgeon is back with a video for his new single as Status/Non-Status, “Mashkiki Sunset.” The track comes from his freshly announced album, Surely Travel, out September 23rd.

With soft acoustic guitar lines, shimmering riffs, and perfectly wavering vocal lines, this track is the perfect soundtrack for a sunny drive. Directed by Ghostkeeper’s Sarah Houle, the accompanying video follows an animated paper bird on a journey in a van.

“Mashkiki is the Anishinaabe word for medicine and this song serves as a dedication to love, one of our 7 sacred teachings,” Sturgeon explains.

The forthcoming album was recorded over 10 days in Sudbury at Deadpan Studios. Where the previous Status/Non-Status albums revolved around overlaid harmonies and atmospheric, layered instrumentals, Surely Travel is all about stripping things back to the bone. It’s a loose concept album that’s written as a travel log of animals in flight.

Surely Travel is “a record about being trapped in a van, watching life pass by through a foggy windshield,” Sturgeon explains. “While often pulled far from home, I will picture myself a bird, flying home on a beautiful sunset atop the back of my dear old van.”

You can really hear that sound on today’s preview, “Mashkiki Sunset.”
