Steve Lacy returns with video for new bossa nova single ‘Mercury,’ announces forthcoming album ‘Gemini Rights’

The Internet’s Steve Lacy has made an epic return with a video for his new single, “Mercury.” Today’s release comes as part of the announcement of his sophomore album, Gemini Rights, out later this summer via RCA Records.

“Mercury” sees Steve Lacy weaving in and out of genres with ease. He carefully channels the sounds of Brazilian bossa nova, bass-driven funk, and R&B. With dreamy strings, captivating bass lines, and stunning vocals, the self-produced track is a perfect return for Lacy.

Directed by Rubberband, the accompanying video follows Lacy as he performs along to the tune in a fenced-in area of a haunting warehouse.

Not much has been released about the forthcoming album, so you’ll have to hang tight for a tracklist, possible guests, and an exact release date.

Gemini Rights is set to serve as Steve Lacy’s first new album since his 2019 debut, Apollo XXI. Since then, he shared his 2020 compilation album, The Lo-Fis, and hopped on Ravyn Lenae’s “Skin Tight.”

The Lo-Fis was made up of demos and SoundCloud uploads, featuring rarities, early sketches, and unheard tracks. It even featured material that dates all the way back to “when I was in high school,” Lacy explains.

In 2020, Steve Lacy also hopped on Thundercat’s “Black Qualls” alongside Steve Arrington. The groove-heavy “Black Qualls” revolves around a clanging guitar line, a driven drum beat, and a silky bass line as layers and layers of dreamy falsettos take the forefront.
