Stream: Clairo finds hope in domesticity on lush, vulnerable new album ‘Sling’

Claire Cottrill has returned with her sophomore album as Clairo, Sling. Co-produced by Jack Antonoff, this new album features backing vocals from Lorde.

The nuanced new album marks the follow-up to her 2019 debut, Immunity. While her debut channeled a bedroom pop sound, Clairo has moved into a new sonic territory completely. With lush instrumentals, Sling finds Clairo at her most vulnerable.

Clairo is ready to be totally transparent on this new record. Immunity closed with “I Wouldn’t Ask You,” which is about how Cottrill felt helpless as her partner took care of her while she struggled with rheumatoid arthritis. Now, Clairo is ready to be a caregiver. The record was inspired by Cottrill’s time at home in Atlanta during the pandemic. During that time, she spoke with her mother and found herself reconsidering her own future with motherhood. In December, she adopted her dog Joanie, and she has found herself discovering hope in domesticity.

“Joanie, my dog, opened up my world in ways I didn’t think were capable,” Clairo wrote on Twitter. “By caring for her, it forced me to face my own thoughts about parenthood and what it would mean to me. Stories as lessons, regrets as remorse… thinking about something/someone before yourself.”

“It’s a glimpse into a world where I found that domesticity is what I was missing.”

Throughout the album, Clairo is finding herself. Lyrically, Cottrill lets the listener in to all of her insecurities. From “stepping inside a universe designed against my own beliefs” to “forgetting that I’ll have a family,” Cottrill is constantly questioning her future on this relatable album.

Sling opens at full force. From the warmth of “Bambi” to the swirling instrumentals of “Amoeba,” you’ll be captivated from the get-go. “Partridge” will also sweep you off your feet with gentle harmonies and silky falsettos.

Each and every piece of the 12-track album feels absolutely necessary. Clairo ultimately helps you make sense of the world around you by letting you into hers.

Clairo fans, be ready for something completely different. You’re sure to fall in love with Clairo’s sound all over again on Sling.
