Sweaty Betty’s starts GoFundMe to avoid closing due financial strain of pandemic

May Brand, the owner of 17 year old west end Toronto bar Sweaty Betty’s, has started a GoFundMe page to avoid closure because of the financial stress of COVID-19.

“May started out managing Sweaty Betty’s in 2008, and worked tirelessly for a decade to maintain its cool dive bar aesthetic in an increasingly gentrified neighbourhood,” the GoFundMe page reads.

A lot of work had to be put in place for COVID safety precautions, including $15,000 in renovations when Sweaty Betty’s reopened in the summer.

“All funds raised will be used for rent and utilities, which haven’t been easy to pay since the bar has been closed for nearly 6 months this year,” the page continues. “The funds raised will help the bar stay alive over the winter months.”
