Taika Waititi is set to write, direct, and executive produce two original animated series for Netflix, which will be based on Roald Dahl’s work.
The first series will revolve around the world and characters from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the second series will be a wholly original take on the Oompa-Loompas. The shows are set to keep the original tone and spirit of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory “while building out the world and characters far beyond the pages of the Dahl book for the very first time,” according to Netflix.

Netflix has also revealed that they’re pushing the Dahl works as an “animated event series,” and the streaming service is seeking out high-profile names to adapt other stories like Matilda, The BFG, The Twits, and more.
“I grew up reading Dahl stories and lived large parts of my young life in those magical worlds, so finding just the right creative partner to bring Willy Wonka, Charlie and the Oompa-Loompas to life in animation was a daunting task … until Taika walked into the room,” Netflix vp original animation Melissa Cobb explains, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Then it was really obvious. If Dahl had created a character of a filmmaker to adapt his work, I’m pretty sure he would have created Taika.”
