Tanya Tagaq has shared two new tracks, “Colonizer” and “Colonizer (Tundra Mix).”
Both versions of “Colonizer” appear on Tagaq’s forthcoming album, Tongues, out on March 11th, 2022. The song is all about accountability. “Oh you’re guilty. It’s not a question,” a press release explains.
The original version of “Colonizer” emerged out og Tagaq’s improvised live show. While on stage with Nanook of the North in Manchester, overlooking New York City’s Columbus Circle, Tagaq created the track. The song serves as Tagaq’s response to performing in both visibly and symbolically colonial spaces.

The Tundra Mix of the song is quite different from the original. Tagaq created it in collaboration with producers Saul Williams and Gonjasufi. “Colonizer (Tundra Mix)” channels the hypnotic sound of Tongues.

Tongues “speaks not to horrors and crisis, as previous Tanya Tagaq albums wordlessly, powerfully encircled, but directly of these things,” a press release explains. “Tongues is Tagaq at her most explicit and specific.” The album will also balance industrial, electronic sounds with poetic passages from Tagaq’s bestselling mythobiography, Split Tooth.”
In addition to both versions of “Colonizer,” Tongues features the previously released title track.
The forthcoming 10-track collection will serve as a sort of guide for inner and outer revolution. “It is a triumph of strength and intelligence that invites the listener to join her in a personal victory over colonization, over those who take without consent,” a press release continues.
