TBT: “Wasp Nest” by The National

Every Thursday we pick a great song from the past. Huge bands, musical oddities, one-hit wonders, and everything in-between.

“Wasp Nest” by The National
Cherry Tree (EP) (2004)

Between Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers (2003) and Alligator (2005), The National released a 7 song EP titled Cherry Tree. The songs on this EP showcase a band in transition from the raw sound of the former to the more subdued crooning of the latter, which became their trademark sound – fully embraced on 2007’s breakout album Boxer.

“Wasp Nest” is a slow burner driven by Matt Berninger’s poetic narrative accompanied by simple guitar picking and ambient sound. This result is one of The National’s most beautiful songs.
