The Breckenridge Troll (AKA Isak Heartstone) Playfully Stands Watch Over The Colorado Forests
The Breckenridge Troll, a large wooden sculpture named Isak Heartstone, sits proud and playful in the forests of Colorado. Originally created for the Breckenridge International Festival of the Arts, the sculpture was made in 2017.
People come from all over to check out this super unique tourist attraction, and take pictures with him.
However, because it was so cool, it attracted a lot of traffic. Because of this, the artist was brought in to dismantle the original troll, and re-install it in a location that was more suited to the traffic.
You can now visit this troll, just a 15-minute walk from the downtown centre of Breckenridge. If you go, prepare to revel in the creative magic channeled through this prolific sculptor into this unique and fascinating art installation.
Who Created The Breckenridge Troll?
The Breckenridge Troll is a sculpture by Danish artist and recycling activist Thomas Damboas. The sculptor goes by “Dambo” on his website and you should seriously check this guy out.
He’s created the most amazing trolls from wood, and installed them all over the place.
You can find his work all over the world, from various cities in the United States all the way to Copenhagen.
How To Find The Breckenridge Troll
The path that will take you to the Breckenridge Troll is close to the skating rink in Breckenridge. It’s easy to get to, and it doesn’t matter what level of hiker you are.
Plug this into your GPS, and follow the signs. It’s a super family-friendly spot, so they’ve made it nice and safe, and simple to find.
Know Before You Go
Do not park at the ice rink to go and visit this sculpture. In fact, you don’t need to park at all, because this awesome sculpture is a short walk from the downtown centre.
There are a few guidelines to observe and keep in mind:
- Keep your dogs on a leash. Remember that the troll is a work of art, and artists really don’t appreciate when their work is peed on.
- Stay on the trail. There’s lots of private property in the area, so make sure you’re respecting that.
- Don’t climb on Isak. While it looks like you can climb on other Dambo works, this one is not that kind of party.
- The Trollstigen Trail will not be maintained in the winter months, so adventure safely.
How Long Is The Breckenridge Troll Hike?
The city recommends to start in the middle of historic downtown. There’s a spot called the Breckenridge Welcome Centre, which is only a 15 minute walk to Isak.
However, if you want to have a little more adventure, you can hike to the Breckenridge Troll. It’s a 1.5 mile hike, which is easy and suitable for all levels.
When Is The Best Time Of Year To Visit
Depending on the time of year in Colorado, you can run into snow, wind, sun, and definitely some traffic. The busiest time at the troll is obviously going to be when the weather is best, so if you’d like a more intimate experience with this wooden troll, aim to head in the spring or fall.
Summer is always busy, with many locals and tourists having time off.
Leave No Trace
It goes without saying that you’re not going to litter on the trail or be a jerk and leave your coffee cup sitting on Isak’s knee.
The subtleties here, however, are important. This sculpture is a work of art. In this case, the artist and the city ask that you don’t touch or play on it. Don’t pick sticks from his hair. Don’t light cigarettes near him. Definitely don’t have barbecues close to his feet.
You know, just general respect and you should be fine.
