From Hamilton, Ontario, Drew Thomson released his debut full-length album The Drew Thomson Foundation last year. Produced in Los Angeles by Alex Newport (At the Drive-In, City and Colour, Frank Turner), the record showcases Thomson’s burgeoning songwriting abilities as he dives into vivid tales of sobriety, death, and other stops along the journey to find inner peace.
Thomson cites expert storytelling songwriters like Okkervil River, The Streets, Third Eye Blind, and Rufus Wainwright as major influences. “Almost all of these songs started out on acoustic guitar in my bedroom, the same way I’ve been writing music since I was in grade seven,” says Thomson.
“They’re more intimate and not something I’ve really shared this way before. It’s a lot more revealing of who I am now. I started playing music 10 years ago as a lost early 20s alcoholic. I’m now 33, sober, and still a mess but not quite a disaster.”
Watch Thomson perform “Married To The Night” from his 2018 EP Stay, and “Stay” which appears on the same EP as well as his 2019 full-length album The Drew Thomson Foundation.
