The Flaming Lips collaborate with young fan Nell Smith on Nick Cave covers album ‘Where the Viaduct Looms’

The Flaming Lips have teamed up with a 13-year-old fan, Nell Smith, for their new album Where the Viaduct Looms.

The album sees Smith and the psych rockers teaming up to share their own renditions of nine Nick Cave covers. Today’s album features previously released covers “The Ship Song” and “Girl in Amber.”

“I hadn’t heard of Nick Cave but Wayne suggested that we should start with an album of his cover versions, and then look at recording some of my own songs later,” Smith continues. “It was cool to listen and learn about Nick Cave and pick the songs we wanted to record.”

Nell Smith had attended a whole slew of Flaming Lips gigs over three years. After being spotted at the shows with her father several times, she caught the attention of frontman Wayne Coyne. The pair exchanged contact information and recorded covers remotely throughout the pandemic.

“I still can’t really believe it,” Nell Smith says of the collaboration. “It was a really steep learning curve but Wayne was so encouraging when I was struggling with a few of the songs that I kept going.”

“It is always great to meet excited, young creative people,” Coyne adds of the Nell Smith collaboration. “With Nell we could see she is on a journey and thought it would be fun to join her for a while and see if we could get things going. It was a great way to connect with her and help harness her cool attitude to make music.”
