The Flaming Lips took to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night (September 30th) to perform “Mother I’ve Taken LSD.”
The trippy, psychedelic performance sees the Flaming Lips decked out in some epic hairdos. The epic American Head cut fits the trippy whirlwind of a performance perfectly, with its colourful visuals. While most of the Flaming Lips’ concerts of late have been from the safety of plastic bubbles, they ditched them for this clip.
American Head marked the band’s 21st album. It was created with collaborator and producer David Fridmann.

“The music and songs that make up the American Head album are based in a feeling,” Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne explains. “A feeling that, I think, can only be expressed through music and songs. We were, while creating it, trying to NOT hear it as sounds… but to feel it. Mother’s sacrifice, Father’s intensity, Brother’s insanity, Sister’s rebellion…I can’t quite put it into words.”

The Flaming Lips performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live back in April. During the performance of “Will You Return / When You Come Down,” they recruited Micah Nelson. It marked the band’s first show sans bubbles.
Performing at the Blue Note Lounge in Oklahoma City, where they first performed back in 1983, the band were joined by Nelson, who performed vocals and guitar. The blissed-out performance did the American Head track justice, with bright wigs and psychedelic lighting.
