The Sirius XM Indies went down on Friday March 22nd at the Kool Haus as part of Canadian Music Week. Indie artists from all music genres were celebrated in front of a packed house of indie aficionados, media, and industry players.
9 awards were handed out over the course of the evening including Favourite Video of the Year and awards for Best Female, Male, and Emerging Artist.
In addition to the awards the crowd was treated to 9 live performances from the likes of Cadence Weapon, The Wooden Sky, Diamond Rings, Matt Mays, Yukon Blonde and Metric who closed the evening with a passionate and energetic set.
Several artists spoke to Indie 88.1 Toronto about the anticipation building towards the launch of Canada’s first dedicated Indie radio station.
“It’s the best thing really. That’s huge exposure for those bands. It took us 7 years to get any exposure on radio. Canada has amazing musicians that don’t get that chance. That’s the best part of it.“
Brandon Scott from Yukon Blonde
“It’s exciting for me and for Toronto to have some mainstream exposure for something that’s been below the radar for so long“
Gavin Gardiner from The Wooden Sky
As Canadian music week nears completion, the indie music scene made it’s voice heard in one of CMWs hottest events.
