The National are back with their first new material since 2019, “Somebody Desperate.”
The haunting new song comes from the forthcoming musical film CYRANO. The film’s score is by the National’s Aaron and Bryce Dessner, and for the end credits, they got the whole band together. “Somebody Desperate” is a sparse, melancholic ballad that sees frontman Matt Berninger’s deep croons at the forefront.
Cyrano is out on December 31st, but the soundtrack is out on November 26th via Decca Records. The film is Joe Wright’s adaptation of Erica Schmidt’s titular stage musical. That musical is also based on Edmond Rostand’s 1897 play, Cyrano de Bergerac.

In the film, Cyrano (Peter Dinklage) is in love with Roxanne (Haley Bennett). He assumes she would never love him back because of how he looks, but when she says she’s in love with Christian (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), Cyrano helps him woo her by writing letters for him to send her.
“Somebody Desperate” follows the previously released soundtrack single, “Someone to Say.” Berninger isn’t the only person to provide vocals on the soundtrack. Castmembers Dinklage, Bennett, Harrison Jr., and Glen Hansard all offer up their own vocals as well. The London Symphony Orchestra and pianist Vikingur Ólafsson also appear on the soundtrack. The forthcoming album will be out on CD, LP, and white vinyl.

The National did release a live album earlier this year. However, prior to “Somebody Desperate,” the last time the band released new music was when they released their album, I Am Easy To Find.
