The New Basement Tapes Supergroup Perform on Ellen

The New Basement tapes channel their inner Bob Dylan for a performance on Ellen

In case you haven’t heard about the new collaboration, The New Basement Tapes, it features Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons, Elvis Costello, Jim James, the Carolina Chocolate Drops’ Rhiannon Giddens, and Dawes’ Taylor Goldsmith. Needless to say, it’s a pretty stacked lineup of incredible musicians.

How did The New Basement Tapes come together though? Their website says

“Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes is a music event 47 years in the making. The album celebrates the discovery of never-seen Bob Dylan lyrics from that legendary 1967 period and marks a creative highpoint for the album’s participants – Burnett, Costello, Giddens, Goldsmith, James and Mumford – who have brought them to life nearly 50 years later.”

They’ve just released that project and decided they decided to perform on Ellen. The group played “Kansas City” with Marcus Mumford handling lead vocals while Elvis Costello jammed on the piano in the back.
