On August 20, 2016, following the announcement of Gord Downie’s brain cancer diagnosis, The Tragically Hip performed their final concert in their hometown of Kingston, Ontario.
In May of 2016, the Tragically Hip revealed their touring plans for their 13th album, Man Machine Poem. The tour wrapped with the band’s last concert ever, which was held at the K-Rock Centre in Kingston.
The final show, which took place on August 20th, 2016, was broadcast commercial free on the national broadcaster’s various platform, and a whopping 11.7 million people tuned into the concert.
The tour got Downiest named the Canadian Press’s Canadian Newsmaker of the Year for 2016, which marked the first time a musician had ever been given the honour.
