10 Scary Ocean Pictures That Reveal What Lurks In The Murky Depths
I have a hard time with scary ocean pictures.
Not sure about you, but deep water used to be the most terrifying idea in the whole world to me. Unlimited depths and potential monsters… you never know what’s lurking under your tender, vulnerable feet, waiting to eat your lower limbs and leave you a lifeless stump unable to swim and save yourself.
Fear of the ocean is called Thalassophobia, and it’s a thing a lot of people experience.
For example, I saw this image a couple years ago and it really summarized (and validated) my fears:
Because of this, I started doing my own little version of stress exposure therapy to help me. I decided to start swimming past my comfort zone in the ocean whenever I had the chance. It scared me just enough to get that tingle-barf feeling, but was also safe enough because I was, after all, inside ropes. LOL as if ropes means a goddam thing in the ocean.
Anyways. After swimming out to deep water regularly, the fear started to go away. I can now paddle board way out there, swim in deeps, and do other things that would have made me queasy before. Yay, me.
However, when I saw these scary ocean pictures, my fear returned in full force . I basically un-did all the hard work I’d done to overcome anxiety and the terror.
So… I hope they’re as meaningful to you as they were to me.

Gives you an idea of how little we know about what’s going on underneath us. I wonder if the sharks know the camera is underneath them. Hmmm.

This is exactly what I mean by unlimited depths and potential monsters… you never know what’s lurking under your tender, vulnerable feet.

Yeah right. Let’s go deep underwater AND in an enclosed space for scary ocean pictures. No thanks, I’d rather shove a spoon in my eye.

These jellyfish are actually deadly. I appreciate what some people will do for the ‘gram, but wow. That’s effing terrifying.
6) Belly Of The Shark
What’s worse than being in the belly of a whale? Being sucked into the cavernous mouth of this prehistoric sea beast and not even having the chance to take your flippers off before you’re slowly digested by its putrid stomach acids. One of the pinnacles of the scary ocean pictures, for sure.
7) My Anaconda Don’t
I’m not sure if this is the ocean or not but look at the size of this snake! I think it could eat me and my friends all at the same time.
8) Dean’s Blue Hole
This is Dean’s Blue Hole, and people have died here. Doesn’t get creepier than that: a dark, watery hole of unknown depths that also has caves with old skeletons stuck to the walls that died scuba diving. Ugh.
9) Crack of Death
Almost as terrifying as Jacob’s Well and Dean’s Blue Hole is this tiny crack in the rocks where for some unknown reason people would see it fit to swim between. What if a rock fell? What if a shark came? It just gets darker and darker the deeper you get. Sounds fun! Not.
10) Quintessential Jaws Shot
What would an article about scary ocean pictures be without a shot of a great white with its mouth open? Nothing. That’s what it would be. So here you go! Frightening as anything you’ll ever see. I hope that’s satisfying for you.
