These Medieval Cat Paintings Are Both Majestic & Terrifying

Yup, Medieval Cat Paintings Are A Thing

Medieval human paintings can be so beautiful. Medieval cat paintings? Not so much.

I have a lot of respect for artists. I certainly don’t mean to ‘be judgemental’. But it would seem that either cats have morphed and changed A LOT over the past few hundred years, or the painters of that era had a hard time artistically capturing their essence.

Whatever the reason for these hilarious depictions, they definitely deserve your scrolling time. This will for sure give you a good chuckle with your friends at the office.

Way Too Much Innuendo

While we don’t know the specifics, this drawing seems to be extremely… suggestive? It’s clear what’s in the cat’s mouth. But why is the human offering it a fish instead?

And is that a cat, or is it actually a squirrel? Looks like a squirrel head to me.

King of Cats?

Kind of like this guy is saying ‘heck it to the man’ with that tongue out like that. Not sure what kind of waves this cat is riding but it looks like… actually I don’t know what it looks like.

Cat or Monkey?

Many of these medieval cat paintings seem to have a human element to them. This one (which looks like a monkey to me) is featured on a floating stool with some Christmas decorations. And a bagpipe.

Trojan Horse? Or Cat?

Looks like a mini horse. Not sure what else to say.

Worst Day Ever

Cats in Renaissance paintings had it rough. I think they actually had really bad days sometimes. This particular kitty was captured on one of its worst days ever.

Again. Human Face.

Didn’t these painters understand that we are not the same as cats? Don’t they see the difference? With all due respect, are they so used to painting their own kind that cats get human faces? Look at that nose! That is not a cat nose! Or mouth. Or eyes. I’m done.

Eating? Or Freeing?

Maybe it’s just me, but these cats seem magnanimous. Is the white one setting a rat free? Is the black one trying to eat the bird? Or set it free? I personally love how they depicted the dog licking itself as an homage to the age-old battle between cats and dogs. Or maybe its just sleeping. Who’s to say?

Cat Cave Painting

Is this Renaissance cat painting happy? Or sad? Are the nails red because it just killed something? And what’s with the red eyes? This is another King of Cats too. I feel like I’m missing something. Maybe it’s a reference to Cat and the Queen?
