Also known as a Japanese “blanket table”, or even a Japanese warm table, the kotatsu is possibly one of the most ingenious inventions to come out of Japan.
What Is A Kotatsu table?
A kotatsu table is basically a table frame that sits on top of a heavy blanket. In addition, there’s a heater placed under the table itself, which heats up the entire situation.
If you get a really big one, it’s basically like the best blanket fort ever. You can hang out there for hours, with all the people you want. Chilling under blankets has become an international pastime since Covid hit. The kotatsu blanket has empowered families and room mates all over the world, and especially Japan, to hang out and not worry about a thing. And be in the warmest place ever: under a blanket with a heater, and a table in the middle for food.

The ingenious creation of the kotatsu blanket happened back in the 14th century. Back then, and even still today in some areas, walls were thin. Therefore, families needed to use alternative ways to stay warm in the winter. This extended specifically to when they were eating.
The design of the kotatsu blanket has morphed and evolved over the years. Today, there are many modern versions of kotatsu. You can get a desk-style kotatsu to keep you warm while you’re working by a window. You can also get one with storage space to meet so many different needs at once.
Now, you can even get a super big kotatsu futon. Do this, and you’re pretty much guaranteed to never leave your house.
How To Create Your Own Kotatsu Blanket Table At Home
Believe it or not, you can create one of these incredible pieces of furniture in your own home, with things you already have! Well, you might need to pick up a thing or two. But remember that it will be so worth it when you’re hanging out underneath the warmest blanket with your friends or family. You guys can tuck into some video games, read a book, do some drawing or internetting, or even get lost in Netflix for hours.
And in the middle of all that is a table to hold your snacks. I’m literally going to get one right now.
