Thundercat is back with a new single called “Satellite (feat. Louis Cole & Genevieve Artadi).”
The new single comes from the soundtrack for the fourth and final season of Issa Rae’s HBO series, Insecure. Thundercat’s edition, “Satellite,” is a groove-driven, soulful tune. The tune has a bit of a psychedellic haze to it.
With dreamy synths and a dry, casual percussion line, Thundercat’s signature bass sound adds a warm tinge to the tune. Louis Cole brings a funky sound to the instrumental, and Genevieve Artadi offers up guest vocals. Artadi delivers bright, stunning harmonies on the tune.
Listen to “Satellite” below.
“Satellite” serves as Thundercat’s first original tune in 2021. Earlier this year, he guested on HAIM’s “3 AM” remix, Kaytranada’s “Be Careful,” and Ace Hashimoto’s “Vaporwaves.”
Despite not being a solo original tune like “Satellite,” each of those collaborations definitely stand out.
The Kaytranada collab sees Thundercat and Kaytra finding the perfect balance between their sounds. Together, they create an electronic tune with a funky soul groove.
The Ace Hashimoto collaboration sees Thundercat delivering his signature funky bass sound. “This song is about existential crisis and I believe it was that concept that led me to feeling free enough to do things I’ve always wanted to do, while also being even more grateful for the things I CAN do,” Hashimoto wrote of the tune. “Basically, be aware of your own mortality. Remember, we’re all just human. And tell the people you care about, ‘I’m happy to have you in my life.’”
