To Toll or not to Toll: Gardiner and Don Valley Parkway might become Toll Highways

Tolls may range from $1.25 to $3.25 for cars, double for trucks.

Hang on to your coffee change, you might need it. According to The Star, city staff are pushing for flat-fee tolls for the Gardiner Expressway and the Don Valley Parkway that range from $1.25 to $3.25, with double the toll for trucks. They are also considering a 407-esque pay-by-distance method that would charge regular vehicles between 10 and 35 cents per kilometre (trucks still paying double).

Toronto’s transportation GM, Stephen Buckley, is looking for authorization to complete a full study on the potential tolling system. City staff estimated the combined cost of both highways at approximately $4 billion. What do you think, are the tolls are a necessary evil, or an unreasonable cost to an already expensive city?
