Tori Amos shares new pandemic-inspired single ‘Speaking With Trees’

Tori Amos is back with a new single, “Speaking With Trees.”

The track comes from her forthcoming 16th studio album, Ocean to Ocean, out October 29th via Decca Records. “Speaking With Trees” is a slightly melancholic piano pop tune. Lyrically, the track is inspired by the pandemic. Amos sings lines like, “I’ve been hiding your ashes under the tree house/ Don’t be surprised I cannot let you go.”

“Speaking With Trees” is about “the pain felt by artists in a period in which there was no hope in sight for live music.”

More about Ocean to Ocean:

The forthcoming record is set to be Amos’ most personal work in years. After the storming of the Capitol on January 6th, Tori Amos entered a sort of personal crisis. This new album sees the renowned channeling that energy into her music. You can really feel that on today’s preview, “Speaking With Trees.”

“This is a record about your losses, and how you cope with them,” Amos explains. “Thankfully when you’ve lived long enough, you can recognize you’re not feeling like the mom you want to be, the wife you want to be, the artist you want to be. I realized that to shift this, you have to write from the place where you are. I was in my own private hell, so I told myself, then that’s where you write from – you’ve done it before…”

Tori Amos says that the resulting album channels the sounds of her renowned 1992 debut record, Little Earthquakes. She wrote the album in Cornwall during the UK’s third lockdown.

You can pre-order the Spectacular Vinyl Release of Ocean to Ocean, out January 28th, here.
