Toronto dream-pop outfit Tallies share video for new single ‘Special’

Toronto’s Tallies are back with a video for their new single, “Special.”

The track comes from their forthcoming sophomore album, Patina, out July 29th via Kanine Records, Hand Drawn Dracula, and Bella Union. Thematically, Tallies frequently explore the juxtaposition of light and dark, and you can really hear that on their new jangle-pop tune, “Special.”

“‘Special’ is about longing to be seen and heard by those who matter to you most,” bandmember Sarah explains. “Sometimes feeling invisible is particularly painful when the indifference comes from someone whose opinion means a lot to you.”

Today’s release truly channels the sounds of the forthcoming album, honing in on influences like The Sundays, Galaxie 500, and Ride. Even though the new tune sounds bright and breezy, Sarah’s vulnerable lyricism adds a darker edge to the tune.

Produced by Holy Fuck’s Graham Walsh, the new album was a true labor of love. After being delayed due to the pandemic, the record ended up being extremely rewarding after Cocteau Twins’ Simon Raymonde signed Tallies to Bella Union. Ultimately, Raymonde provided “a light at the end of a dark tunnel,” Cogan says.

In addition to “Special,” Patina features previously released singles “Hearts Underground,” “No Dreams of Fayres,” “Wound Up Tight,” and “Heavens Touch.”
