In the 2017 Safe Cities Index from The Economist, Toronto ranks fourth internationally, and number one in North America.
The cities are ranked according to 49 different indicators, which cover bases such as digital security, health security, infrastructure security, and personal security. Not only is Toronto considered to be the safest city in North America, but it is also the only Canadian city that appears on the list.
Toronto ranks particularly high in the sections of Digital Security and Personal Security. The report notes that the top ten cities in personal security (including Toronto) are all upper-middle to high income cities. Toronto received an overall score of 87.36. Tokyo was ranked the number one safest city in the world for the third year in a row, with a score of 89.8.
