Toronto singer-songwriter Deanna Petcoff shares vulnerable, heartbreaking new single ‘I Don’t Wanna Get Over You’

Toronto singer-songwriter Deanna Petcoff is back with a new single, “I Don’t Wanna Get Over You,” out now via Royal Mountain Records.

The new single is an ode to moving on, even when you don’t want to. “I Don’t Wanna Get Over You” is all about when your heart moves on before your head is ready to. Petcoff has firmly cemented herself in Toronto’s indie scene, even namedropping the Horseshoe Tavern just five words in. With gritty guitars and vulnerable lyricism, you’ll find yourself revisiting this song again and again.

“I wrote this song with my good friend Jacob Switzer over Zoom somewhere during the second lockdown (in Toronto),” Petcoff explains of “I Don’t Wanna Get Over You.” “We wanted to write something to stay connected to each other during a time of extreme loneliness and isolation, so we decided to take this small idea I had and turn it into this sad, Strokes-y tune. We’d both been listening to a lot of The Magnetic Fields, and really valued how honest and brutal their writing can be. We wanted to say something that hurt a little bit, was a little bit embarrassing, but ultimately the most honest we could be.”

The accompanying visualizer for “I Don’t Wanna Get Over You” is truly captivating. The clip comes packed with shimmering, brooding gold shots of Petcoff and Nolan Begley.

Prior to the release of “I Don’t Wanna Get Over You,” Petcoff shared a video for her single “Failing Upwards.” “Failing Upwards” is a confessional track all about falling out of love.
