Toronto synth-rocker Rebecca Emms has shared a video for her new single as TOVI, “Mad Melancholia.”
The single marks TOVI’s first new music since her sophomore EP, Hard Feelings. “Mad Melancholia” is an electro-rock anthem with a psychedelic tinge. Alongside the track, she’s shared a playful animated video that she created herself. The video comes packed with captivating stop-motion style drawings that fit the track perfectly.
“‘Mad Melancholia’ is a song about mentally spiralling,” TOVI explains. “Those late night/early morning thoughts where it seems like everything is the absolute worst, the ones that keep you from falling asleep. Fading in and out of reality. I wanted the dramatic lyrics with the lullaby-like melody to feel a bit tongue in cheek, expressing this frustration of losing control of my own thoughts.”

Lyrically, TOVI delivers lines like, “He’s been breaking my heart/ Since the first day that I met him/ He said ‘Be Good, be safe, see you someday’/ But I’m still trying to shake it.”
“A lot of the song was recorded in my bedroom studio with instruments added/edited with Josh Korody in his studio,” TOVI adds. “It turned out really cinematic! I felt inspired by both the sound and visual elements of the lyrics in the song to take a stab at creating an animation for the first time. It was all a big experiment of creating these moving sketches, that eventually came together as a full video.”
