In January 2008 the movie industry was hit with an unexpected death. During the editing process for the highly anticipated new film The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger lost his life to an overdose at the age of 28. Seven months later, a dark cloud was cast over the release of the film, which many would agree was Ledger’s most compelling performance yet. Heath Ledger played the Joker like no one had before, setting the bar high for comic book-based films to come.
Before The Dark Knight, the Australian star became known for films like 10 Things I Hate About You, A Knight’s Tale, Brokeback Mountain, and The Patriot.
This new documentary, I Am Heath Ledger, explores Ledger’s life through his own gaze and the gaze of the people who knew him. From what we can gather from the trailer, Ledger spent a large part of his life carrying a camera around and filming himself, which seems to be the highlight of this documentary. The trailer also sees Ledger’s sister, a childhood friend, and a few people that worked with him in the movie industry.
I Am Heath Ledger will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 23. Watch the trailer below.
